Dear Fellow Rotarians,
It was Past R.I. President Jonathan Majiyagbe who emphasised the importance of the family of Rotary by creating the Family of Rotary Task Force, continued the following year by 2004-05 R.I. President Glenn E. Estess Sr.
These two gentlemen also urged clubs and Districts to start Family of Rotary committees. This year, I have discontinued the task force because I feel it has achieved its mission . . . clubs and Districts all over the world have created Family of Rotary committees. For those that have not, it is never too late.
It may be worth giving some thought to the question: Just what is the family of Rotary?
Of course, each Rotarian has a personal family. Some of these families are very heavily involved in Rotary service, while others are not.
This may be for cultural or local reasons. The decision to support Rotary is really up to the individual and is not something that Rotary International can force upon anybody.
But the family of Rotary can be more than a single family unit.
It can represent many aspects of the organisation.
The R.I. Board is part of the family of Rotary International. So is each District as well as each club. Each Group Study Exchange team is part of the family of Rotary. So are our Rotaractors and Interactors and our Youth Exchange students studying abroad.
Our R.I. training leaders and all our committees and resource groups form various parts of the family of Rotary. Finally, The Rotary Foundation is a large and important part of our family of Rotary.
It is important that we care about the family of Rotary. It helps us in our work and it creates fellowship and friendship, two of the cornerstones on which Rotary International has been built.
Even though the Family of Rotary Task Force no longer exists, its spirit is very much alive and sound.
I urge all those Districts and clubs that have not created a Family of Rotary committee to start one during the month of December, which is Family Month.
By doing so, we honour our commitment to Service Above Self and continue to show the world the great leadership of Rotary International. Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar
