15th birthday for
Adventure in citizenship
The Rotary clubs of Canberra and Canberra Woden, A.C.T., with the National Capital Authority, are celebrating 15 successful years of the Adventure in Citizenship program.
Since 1990, 900 delegates from around Australia have travelled to Canberra to take part in the program. It aims to increase delegates’ awareness of their responsibilities as citizens, the values and privileges of being Australian, and the role of Canberra as the national capital of Australia.
Each year invitations are sent to all Rotary clubs in Australia to nominate Year 11 students. Delegates are brought to Canberra to take part in an intensive five- day program which includes meeting local members of the House of Representatives or senators at Parliament House.
Adventure in Citizenship is structured to stimulate the delegates, many of whom will no doubt be future leaders in the community, to think about Australia as a whole, its political culture, its economy, and its legal system.
The program also provides the young people with the opportunity to discuss, at a national level, contemporary issues that will affect their future.
Comments from 2004 delegates included:
“Very good!! And interesting.”
“Excellent, informative, a real highlight.”
“Really interesting . . . a whole new experience . . . ”
“Absolutely brilliant!”
The delegates are home hosted by families of the two Canberra Rotary clubs involved. |

The program is run while Parliament is sitting and delegates get an opportunity to not only be present during parliamentary sittings but to visit some of Canberra’s tourist attractions, and meet peers from throughout the nation.
The comprehensive program typically includes:
• Guided tour of Parliament House.
•Official opening address by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
•Visits to the National Capital Authority exhibition, National Museum of Australia, Old Parliament House, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australian War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport and Questacon.
•Meetings and teleconferences with Members of Parliament representing delegates.
