Library opening a
big day on Taveuni Island

March 30, 2005, will always hold a special place in the hearts of Rotarians on Taveuni Island, Fiji. That was the day they witnessed the joy of the students of Bouma Primary School on the island of Taveuni.

One thing led to another

Norton get ready to send eye glasses to be recycled in Nepal.

The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise, N.S.W., has maintained its project of sending eye glasses to Nepal to help people in remote and rural areas. The project began in 2002 and the glasses go to the Damauli-Tanahan district. In 2000, the Sunrise club entered into a joint project with the Rotary Club of Kinghorn/Burntisland Club in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Damauli Rotary Club in Nepal to establish a women’s literacy project in the Tanahan district.

With a relationship established it seemed fitting to continue to support the people of this region. Sunrise Rotarian Kerrie Wood said: “The Rotary Club of Damauli hosts monthly eye camps to provide treatment to people from remote areas and they were very excited at the prospect of adding spectacles to the support being offered to the village people.” The assistance of Hanks Chapman & Cornale Optometrists and David and Vicki Sork who have been collecting the glasses is much appreciated by the club. Damauli spokesperson Shiv Singh said: “The eye glasses are indeed very useful. Our thanks go to Port Macquarie Sunrise for its wonderful support to the people of Nepal.”

The Rotary Club of Taveuni Island, along with the Rotary clubs of Newmarket, Mangere, Pohutukawa and the Rotary New Zealand World Community Service (RNZWCS), handed over to the Bouma Primary School pupils, teachers and Bouma Village community, a beautiful library, complete with books.

The library was a first for the school and a major Centennial project for the club. Rotarians took over a derelict building, gutted and re-roofed it, put on new lining, lighting, windows, flyscreens, shelving and computer desks. The exterior base walls were plastered and steps built.

Primary School Library (see item above).

The villagers of Bouma and the school turned the handover of the library into a major Fijian traditional event with a kava ceremony, presentation of whale's tooth to the Rotary Club of Taveuni Island and Fijian dancing.

This project not only gave future generations a chance to better education, but also taught four young Bouma men building and painting skills and renewed enthusiasm and life in the school and village. This was the club’s second school library project. The first was for Wainikeli District School at Qeleni Village on Taveuni. The library projects cost $F35,000 each. Rotary Club of Taveuni Island, Fiji, President Lorna Cammick thanked Past President Geoffrey Amos, Freddy Petersen and all club members for a job well done.
