CONVENTION
Malmö and Copenhagen - a convention of many firsts

by Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar

The word international is a vital part of our organisation's name. And what
better time to experience this unique aspect of our membership than
during an R.I. Convention?

My wife, Monica, and I would like to invite you to Rotary's 97th convention in beautiful Malmö and wonderful Copenhagen from June 11 to 14, 2006. This convention is a first in many ways.

It is the first to be held in the northern part of Europe. It is also the first convention to be held simultaneously in two countries – Sweden and Denmark – and it has special
significance as the first to be held during Rotary's second century of service.

Malmö and Copenhagen are linked by a bridge, which has inspired the theme
for this event: Rotary International Bridging the World.

Pre-convention meetings,
such as the Rotaract, RYLA and Youth Exchange events, will be held on the
Swedish side, while the actual convention will be staged on the Danish side.

The weather should be ideal . . . not too warm, not too cool. Daylight hours are at their peak this time of the year. Malmö and Copenhagen are located not far from the Land of the Midnight Sun, which means that you can enjoy almost 24 hours of daylight.

Rotary's 2006 Malmö-Copenhagen Convention Committee and the Host Organisation Committee are working hard to put together an interesting program that will have something for everybody. This convention will be an experience you will never forget. Fellowship and friendship, two of the cornerstones on which Rotary was built will flourish with the opportunity to meet old and new friends.

I look forward to seeing you in beautiful Malmö and wonderful Copenhagen next June.

• Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar is president of Rotary International and a member of the Rotary Club of Göteborg, Sweden.
