MOVING IN ON MALARIA
with Cobar

The District 9670 Partners Project for 2005-2006 has launched a concerted attack on malaria.

Although some aspects of the campaign have taken a light-hearted approach, District 9670’s bottom line is “every dead mosquito represents a life saved.” Fiona Whatham, partner of District 9670 Governor Don Whatham, selected RAM Raid after it was suggested as the District Partners Project by the members of the Rotary Club of Cobar, N.S.W.

Some aspects of the RAM Raid campaign have taken a light-hearted approach to get across the serious message of preventing deaths from malaria. The project was initiated by the Rotary Club of Cobar, N.S.W., and has been taken up by the District 9670 Partners. The bottom line is “every dead mosquito represents a life saved.”

The Cobar Rotarians at that time were in the early stages of implementing RAM Raid as a local endeavour. Cobar, in western N.S.W., has a Rotary club of eight members, yet has initiated noteworthy projects including the annual Outback Tour. However, on considering this suggestion, Fiona Whatham was impressed by the initiative displayed in proposing such an ambitious and far-reaching plan despite the limitations of a small club membership. Fiona set the RAM Raid wheels in motion at the District 9670 changeover dinner and District clubs have raised $A7,500 to provide insecticide-treated mosquito nets to malaria-prone communities. Fiona Whatham is confident that the target of $20,000 will be achieved and the draft Matching Grant application which was prepared at a D9670 The Rotary Foundation seminar will then be activated. Thanks go to District 9670 Clubs for having supported the project and to the Rotary Club of Maroubra, in District 9750, for a $2,000 donation. – Joe Palagy.
