OBITUARIES

John Louttit’s legacy of outstanding service

The late John Louttit had an outstanding career in the Public Service and private practice, was a qualified accountant, enjoyed leisure time as an accomplished rugby union player, referee and official, and served as the general manager of the largest law firm in the A.C.T.

His professional and community service included his roles as president of the A.C.T. Chamber of Commerce and vice-chairman of the Australian Chamber of Commerce, captain in the Citizen Military Forces, president of the A.C.T. Liberal Party and long periods of leadership with Red Shield Appeal and Australia Day Committees.

In Rotary, he was governor of District 9710 in 1996-97 and served for years on numerous club, district, national and international Rotary committees.

He was vice-chairman of the Rotary Global History Fellowship at the time of his death, and had previously served as treasurer of Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS). He initiated his club's unique relationship with the Rotary Club of Nara, Japan.

Canberra’s sister city relationship with Nara Japan and the Canberra-Nara Park in Lennox Gardens on Lake Burley Griffin are lasting reminders of the inspiration of this exceptional community leader.

A measure of the man lies in the fact that of all his outstanding Rotary achievements, he was most proud of his service in support of his wife Anne during her year as District Governor in 2003-2004.

John Louttit was awarded membership of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2000 for services to Rotary, welfare, business and sporting organisations.

A multiple Paul Harris Fellow through his club and District, John Louttit was honoured with Rotary International's Service Above Self award.

He is survived by his wife Anne, son Matthew and daughter Rachel from his first marriage, a legion of friends and a legacy of outstanding service to his fellow man.
