The Young Carers Awards in Western Australia have evolved from being organised by Silver Chain to an event that is now co-organised by Silver Chain, Carers WA, the Rotaract Club of the University of Western Australia and the Rotary Club of Nedlands.

The official awards are presented by the premier at a ceremony in his office. This is followed by a barbecue in Kings Park for all nominees and their families, parents/guardians.

The barbecue is a great way to show these young people that the community admires them for what they do.

With the help of Rotaract Club of the University of Western Australia, a Young Carers network is being established to encourage these young people to get together on a few occasions throughout the year to have some fun away from their daily workloads.

This adds a valuable purpose to the annual activities of Rotaract and its members and, of course, provides a potential source for new Rotaractors.

For Rotary, it provides a source of
worthy candidates to be sponsored into programs such as the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) and the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) and other leadership courses supported by various clubs.

It also strengthens the bond between Rotary and Rotaract as the two are working together on this project.

It has the added benefit of providing recognition with government and the sponsoring companies of the work that Rotary is doing in the community.
