AXEL HANDEVITT-HAAR (D9450): Sixteen years in Local Gover nment in Denmark in port f olios of public transport, energy and the local airport have given him a good grounding in leadership and serving the community. For services to D e n m a rk he was cre a ted a Knight of the Fi rs t Degree of the Order of the Dannebrog. Migrating to Australia in 1986 he established an export / i mport business. He is the honorary vice-consul of Denmark in Western Australia. He has been a Rotarian for 27 years, 11 of them in D e n m a rk. With the Rotary Club of Nedlands, W.A., he has been involved in membership growth. He has also served at District 9450 and Tri - Districts levels in members hi p development and retention. A Paul Harris Fellow, he is married to Kirsten. They have a daughter and two sons. JOHN IRIKS (D9460): The second of a fa m i l y of 10
   
JOHN IRIKS (D9460): The second of a fa m i l y of 10
children, John migrated to Australia in 1951. The family then moved to Western
Australia in 1953 to the new township of Kwinana. After serving as an accountant in industry and Local Government,
John began his own practice.
John and wife Chris have served their community in various ways. He was a councillor for six years and awarded the Kwinina Business Person of the
Year in 1992. John was inducted into the Rotary Club of
Kwinana after taking part in a Group Study Exch a n g e
visit to Norway in 1979. A Paul Harris Fellow, he has served his club twice as president.
   
D9470 HUGH LANGRIDGE (D9470): A Rotarian with Ascot,
W.A., club since 1991, Hugh is a Pa u l H a rri s Fellow.
Wife Karon was the charter president of the Inner Wheel Club of Ascot. Hugh has been active at District level being a member
or chairman of committees for membership growth and extension, education, PolioPlus and PolioPlus Partners. He has served two terms as an assistant governor.
Hugh is a member of the West Australian tri-District Centennial Celebration Committee.
   
KATINA JONES (D9500): In 1996 was inducted as the
fi rst woman member of the Rotary Club of Adelaide
Light, S.A. Since has served on various committees and as an assistant goveror. Having established productive
and profitable businesses through-out Australia through EQUALS International, Katina continues to lead a team into new and innovative consulting
areas. Katina and Je f f r ey have been married more than 30 years, having four children and a grandchild.
EUAN MILLER (D9520): In 1974, New Zealand-born
   
Euan Miller (5920). Euan was inducted into the Rotary Club of Essendon, Vic.
In 1980, he moved to South Australia and was inducted
into the Rotary Club of Norwo o d. He has been active at District level and was the special
reprentative in the establishment of Australia’s first New Model club in 2001. A Winston Churchill Fellow, he has held State and Local Government executive positions
in New Zealand, Victoria and South Australia.
He co-ordinates small business development in metropolitan Adelaide through a network of business enterprise centres. Euan
and wife Jill, a public librarian, have a family of two and are keen bush walkers.
   
TREVOR WILLIAMS (D9550): Soon after taking up the position of water and sewe rage engineer with Burdekin Shire Council , Trevor was inducted into the Rotary Club of Home
Hill, Qld . He has been a Rotarian 13 years and now is the council’s director of works. As well as extensive service
for his club, he has served at District level in Rotary Youth Exchange as a committee member and chairman .
Wife Margaret t rained as a sugar chemist and now works in the office of the local aged care hostel. Margaret is a member of Zonta.
They have a daughter, Louise, who was born in 2002. The
Williams fa m i ly enjoys gardening, particularly growing
roses and gerberas.
JOHN KER (D9570): Born in Childers, Qld., John was later educated in Brisbane, Qld., before returning to his home town. There he joined his father'’s legal fi rm and completed his legal studies. As a solicitor he worked in Gladstone, Qld., and Childers before establishing a branch
in Gayndah , Qld . Married to Kay in 1972, the Kers have a daughter who is a third - g ener ation solicitor and a son who is a corporate treasury analyst in
Japan. The family re-located to Bundaberg, Qld., in 1986. John was inducted into Rotary at Childers in 1969 after being a member of Rural Youth and Apex. Now a member of the Rotary Club of Bundaberg, John has been recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow. The Kers have embarked
on the journey as District governor together as an adventure
in service.
   
RO B E RT JEFFERY (D9600): Adelaide , S.A . - born Robert joined the Australian Army as a medical under-graduate in 1964, graduating in 1967. He saw active service
in South Vietnam and subsequently in Malaysia and Singapore where he provided first line health care to some 600 service personnel and their families. After some postings
to England and Europe, he returned to Australia before marrying Margot
(who was working as a travel guide in
Europe) in New Zealand. Service in
Papua New Guinea and Queensland
was followed by a two-year exchange
to the Academy of Health Sciences U.S.A Army in San Antonio, Texas. Promoted to colonel in 1981 he assumed command in 1989 of First Division Medical Services. In the 1990s he began a second career with Queensland Health in a medical administrative capacity at Ipsw i c h
and Brisbane. Robert has three decades of service with St
John Ambulance . He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Kenmore, Qld., since 1993, serving also at District level. Margot’s quilting is well-recognised as she has been an active supporter of Ke n m o re Rotary ’s projects.
They have two sons Scott and Justin.
   
DES LAWSON (D9630): Des and his Past Presiden wife Rhonda, of the Rotary Club of Po r t of Brisbane,
Qld. , call Brisbane, Qld ., very much their home. Des, raised in Geelong , Vic., was first president of a Rotary club at Coffs Harbour, N. S . W. , i n 1990. In that same year , his sister Cathy (Roth), became charter president of a new club in Geelong (a record further enhanced with t he selection of both Des (D9630) and Cathy (D9780) as governors in the same year). Des became president of the Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly, Qld. , in 1998, having earlier worked to establish the Rotary Club of Port of Brisbane.
He later introduced the CIC (Club in a Club) membership program (seeded by his sister Cathy). In 2000/2001, Des was named Rotarian of the Year in District 9630 and led a successful Group Study E x ch a n g e (GSE) team to the United Kingdom in 2001. Both Des and Rhonda, who had five children, work in their fibreglass supply business.
They spend time on their yacht Pontoon sailing Moreton
Bay.
   
MARGARET HAYES (D9640): Margaret retired in 2000 as Coolangatta Centre Co-ordinator for the Southern Cross University. She is a past president of the Tweed Valley branch of the Australian Federation of University Women and a volunteer for Tweed and Coolangatta Tourism, the hospital
auxiliary and Meals on Wheels . She
was a co-founder of the Tweed District Kindergarten and Riding for the Disabled.
Margaret is a life member of the
local and zone pony club movement .
She has been a Rotarian at Kingscliff, N. S.W., since 1994. Her principal hobbies are breeding
h o rses and sw i m m i n g. Margaret and husband Tony are both Paul Harris Fellows and Benefactors.
HARRY DUREY (D9650): Harry retired in 1999 after 43 year s in public serv i c e, m a i n ly in
education. During those years he held positions in economic research, financial and managerial accounting, compliance and performance auditing, as well as administration at the Queens-land Department of Education and the University of New England. He holds Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of
Commerce and Master of Education Administration degrees from the University
of Queensland and a Master of Public Administration
degree from Harvard niversity. He was a RYLArian in 1961 and has been a Rotarian since 1994. Harry is a member of the Rotary Club of Armidale A.M. His principal hobbies are gardening and genealogy. Harry is a sixth generation Australian. Wife Joyce is a keen quilter. They have four children and seven grandchildren.
MICHAEL MCNAMARA
MICHAEL MCNAMARA (D9670): Born in Junee,
N.S.W., Michael McNamara became a joiner in Wagga
Wagga, N.S.W. He established his own building business i n Junee befo re joining the N. S . W. Public Service. His career extended to be asset manager with the Department of Corrective Services, being responsible for all Corrective Services building matters over a wide area. He met wife Helen through being involved in the Young Christian Workers Youth Group. Helen was a bus driver in regional N.S.W., and later conducted a craft shop in Cootamundra, N.SW.
She now is involved with the Muswell-brook Spinners and Craft Group. Michael, a Rotarian since 1973, has been a member of clubs at Junee, Shell-harbour, Cootamundra and Muswellbrook. At a District
level he has served on committees for The Rotary Foundation and PolioPlus. The McNamaras have two daugh-ters and a son and four grandchildren.
   
BRUCE ALLEN (D9680): Born in Parramatta, N. S.W., Bruce has served
nationally and nternationally with the tyre company, Goodyear. He now conducts
a small management and marketing consultancy. In 1979 he joined the Rotary Club of Blackwood, S.A.,
returning to Sydney, N.S.W., in 1986 when he became a member at Castle Hill. He has led a Group St udy
Exchange (GSE) team to The Netherlands and at a District level has served Rotary Youth Exchange. Bruce and Dita Allen have a son and a daughter.
   
LLOYD ROEVER (D9690): Lloyd completed an
apprenticeship as a motor mechanic in 1961 and then
established a business which remanufactured clutches for
motor ve h i c les. When he sold this business in 1997 it was importing and distributing clutches as well as manufacturing. The business had 65 employees at four branches in three
states. A member of the Rotary Club of Burwood, N.S.W., he has served on
a number of District committees. He was a member of a Rotary Goodwill
Mission to China and is a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1994 Lloyd co-founded the Australian Pituitary
Foundation, a support and lobby group for people with
problems such as pituitary tumours. Wife Christine is a
psychologist and was a school counsellor for 13 years.
Married in 1966, they have a son and a daughter and two
grandsons.
   
BRUCE BARBER (D9700): A second-generation DG as
his father, Graham, was DG for D270 in 1973-74. Bruce went from being a Rotaractor to a member of the Rotary Club of Grif-fith
East, N. S. W., in 1983. He wa s named Rotarian of the Year in 2002.
Bruce farms three properties and has been a director of Sunrise for 18
years. He is a director of a rice research proper t y at Jerilderie, N.S.W. He chairs a trust which has
developed a drain age scheme in his Distr ict. Bruce enjoys flying his microlight and skiing.
Bruce married Ruth in 1970 and they have two sons and a daughter . Ruth teaches students with vision impairment and is involved with a network of choirs.
   
BOB GREENEY (D9710): Born in Sydney, N.S.W., and
educated in Hobart, Tas., and Melbourne, Vic., he began his association with Rotary with the Rotary Club of Oklahoma City in Oklahoma, U.S.A., in 1976 when working overseas. Returning to Australia, he became a member of
the Rotary Club of Belconnen, A.C.T.
He has been club president twice and was named District 9710 Key Rotarian
in 1999-00. He has served on numerous District committees. In 1983 he took part in a FAIM team building a radio communica tions facility for the Christian Missionary Radio Fellowship in the Western Papua New Guinea ighlands. Wif e Tory is a
member of the Inner Wheel Club of Canberra-Belconnen,
A.C.T. An electrical engineer, he has served in the Royal
Australian Air Force and with the International Telecom-mu
n i c ations Union in Geneva, Switz e rl a n d. Both Bob
and Tory are Paul Harris Fellows. He was in a group from
his club that i n 1985-86 initi ated a Group Study
Exc h a n ge- type exchang e between District 9710 and the
S ov i e t Union to assist young business and pro f essional people
